29 April 2014 – Hitching is the traditional method to get to nearby trail towns. My first hitch was into Franklin, TN. A nice, older couple delivering newspapers drove me 13 miles into town. We talked politics, weather, and missing airplanes. The car interior was blazing hot and I was unsure on the protocol to roll down the window or not (I didn’t).
My 5th hitch was yesterday. An off duty policeman offered me a ride 3.5 miles into Waynesboro, VA. We talked about carrying handguns on the A.T. (he would carry and I think they’re too heavy).
Each hitch worked out great and have occurred near “trail towns” with me in full hiker gear, thumb out and big smile; I never waited more than 5 minutes for a ride. I will probably not hitch as much as I move North where it is less accepted.
I’d give ya a ride…even in Maine.

Just make sure you have some Bud Light, I hear that will get you a ride even if you are carrying an axe.
